Current Practices and Challenges in Built Heritage Conservation

Trail Maintenance at Maria Island

On October 2nd the SLNT Team cleared the trails at Maria Major. Even when using weed eaters or raking we have to remain extremely vigilant at this Nature Reserve. On the day in question, thanks to the very watchful eyes of our Grounds and Maintenance Officers, Alexander Paul and Elijah Joseph, we spotted scaly nape pigeon hatchlings and eggs in two nests on the ground. With the weed eater being used in the extremely tall grass along the trail, that was great spotting by Alexander. We used the freshly cut grass to create a perfect buffer around the nest further protecting the chicks. Elijah on the other hand spotted two eggs in an area where the prickly cactus was being trimmed. Along the way up the trail we spotted two male whiptails/“big blue” as we call them on our biosecurity checks on the islands; it was a heavily overcast day so many of the reptiles were not out to bask.

Invitation for Prequalification - Coastal Stablisation Study for the PSEPA

The Saint Lucia National Trust (SLNT) has received financing from the German Development Bank (KfW) through the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) under the Ecosystem-based Adaptation Facility (EbA Facility) toward the costs associated with increasing the climate change resilience and public awareness of the Pointe Sable Environmental Protection Area (PSEPA) and Pigeon Island National Landmark (PINL) ecosystems. The SLNT intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the contract for Consulting Services for a Coastal Stabilisation Study for the PSEPA.

The SLNT plans to prequalify applicants for this consultancy and now invites sealed applications from eligible bidders for the consultancy to undertake the Coastal Stabilisation Study for the PSEPA.

Wildlife Wednesday - White Breasted Thrasher

The Saint Lucia White Breasted, Thrasher Ramphocinclus brachyurus, locally called Goj blanc, is now red listed as an Endangered Species, meaning there is a very high risk of extinction in the wild. The majority of the dry forest lands which form its only habitat are privately owned, mostly not managed and under threat of development. In recent years, in the highest density area of the Thrasher, there has been a sharp increase in unsustainable practices like the removal of tree species used by the bird for nesting and food.

As part of addressing these issues, a project was implemented by Murlina Murray the Programme Assistant/Conservation at the Saint Lucia National Trust. Several activities have been organized to promote the public awareness of the Saint Lucia White Breasted Thrasher and the threats to its habitat. Some of these activities include; administering questionnaires in the communities of Praslin and Dennery, preparation of brochures, creating models of the thrasher and Lorax Environmental Club Activities.
