PINL Jetty Project Commencement & Cheque Presentation Ceremony

The Saint Lucia National Trust held a sod-turning and cheque presentation ceremony on Thursday, January 10, signalling the commencement of works on the rehabilitation of the Jetty at Pigeon Island. The jetty was  damaged by Hurricane Dean last year. This sod turning event was a follow up to a handing over ceremony last month during which the Trust received EC$155,000 from the Taiwanese Embassy.

At the ceremony, Chairman of the Trust, Anderson Lake, thanked the Taiwanese Government for their generous support. He went on to say that the rehabilitation of the jetty is an extremely important project as it plays a critical role in the business operations of the Trust.  The Chairman also mentioned that the Trust was exploring the feasibility of establishing a turtle sanctuary at Anse La Labertie and reopening the nature camp site which was once operational at that site.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King for his part recognized this and pointed out that it is for this reason that he approached the Taiwanese Government for their support. He also praised the Taiwanese ambassador for his embassy’s generous donation.  The Prime Minister pledged his Government’s continued support for the work of the Trust and challenged the organization to invest more in conserving critical components of the island’s natural and cultural patrimony for present and future generations.

Present at this major sod turning event were Taiwanese Ambassador, Tom Chou, representatives of the Trust Council and Minister for Labour, Information and Broadcasting, Honourable Edmund Estaphane.
