Trust calls for Financial Assistance

The Saint Lucia National Trust has set up a Pigeon Island Post Dean Rehabilitation Fund to help restore the island to its former glory. Pigeon Island National Landmark suffered considerable damage at the hands of Hurricane Dean.

According to the Trust, most of the trees in the Landmark have been severely damaged and some completely uprooted. A section of the roadway is completely washed away and other sections have eroded considerably. The Jetty is completely destroyed and the groynes which protect the beaches on Pigeon Island have become dysfunctional. The Trust adds that the shoreline itself has receded by as much as 2 metres in some locations.

The cost of reinstating Pigeon Island is approximately EC$ 3 million. Two million of this would be used for longer term shoreline protection. However, there is an urgent need to raise EC$ 1 million to cater for the immediate general rehabilitation works. Such works include the replacement of the jetty, reinstatement of the groynes, reinstatement of the road network, repairs to damaged electrical circuits, replacement of some damaged equipment and a few other urgent rehabilitation works. The Trust is currently in communication with the relevant government agencies to secure support for the rehabilitation works but this process is likely to take much longer than the time available to reinstate Pigeon Island.

The Saint Lucia National Trust therefore sends out an urgent plea to the public to make a much needed contribution to the Pigeon Island Post Dean Rehabilitation Fund to help restore the island. Contributions may be made by cheque to the Saint Lucia National Trust, by cash donation to our offices or deposited into our account (Number 101180151) at the Bank of Saint Lucia. The Trust asks that you provide them with your contact details so that your contribution can be acknowledged. All contributions to the Saint Lucia National Trust are tax deductible under Section 56 of the Income Tax Act of 1989.
